I tried thinking of a witty title for this post but I can’t. So here goes…
We have been to Disney quite a few times now over the last few years and we have pretty much stayed in every level of resort. Some have been better than others. (And not always the deluxe is the best)
Anyway, now that my kids are slightly older (4 and 7) they spend a lot of time in the Magic Kingdom. And we usually travel with my parents who don’t always want to be touring the parks commando style. For this trip I checked almost daily to find a room at Bay Lake Tower at the Contemporary Resort. It was worth all the effort.
Before I get into it, I do want to say that our trip was NOT without its hiccups but the staff at Bay Lake Tower made every effort to make it right and we would return in a heartbeat. (Seriously, when I was crying at the front desk about unmagical my vacation was starting they took pity on me)
Okay… onto the other stuff.
Bay Lake Tower is part of the Disney Vacation Club and the rooms are considered Deluxe Villa Rooms. The rooms are either studio, one bedroom or two bedrooms (or the amazing Grande Villa with three bedrooms) units. Each unit (except the studios) has a full kitchen and a washer/dryer in it.
On this trip we were booked into both a one and two-bedroom unit because I could not get one unit for the entire stay. We also had a lake view (Beautiful) When we checked in we were assigned to a room on the fifth floor. This was a great place to be because the Sky Bridge that connects Bay Lake Tower to the main Contemporary building is also on the fifth floor. Bay Lake Tower Tip: The Sky Bridge is an amazing place to watch the fireworks from the Magic Kingdom. We watched the Christ mas Party fireworks from the Bridge one night and they were amazing!
Amenities: Bay Lake Tower is a resort.
They have a kids activity center with reasonably priced activities for the kids. There is a boat rental (as well as parasailing) company at the marina. There are two pools. Shuffleboard, volleyball and a nightly campfire. It’s really a place you could relax at (if you weren’t next door to the Magic Kingdom). One of my favorite parts of this resort was that the Bay Lake Tower pool is not deep, in any part. Both of my kids could touch the entire way across. If you have small children it was a total blast to be able to play in the entire space at the pool. The Bay Lake Tower pool is exclusive to guests at Bay Lake Tower. It has a slide and a smallish water play area on the side of the pool. In addition to the pool there is a nice pool bar where you can enjoy an adult beverage and/or a snack while at the pool. The Recreation staff runs games and activities for the kids almost all afternoon at the pool.
If you are looking for a resort that is close to the Magic Kingdom the Contemporary and Bay Lake Tower are it. You can literally hear the Magic Kingdom from your room and you can walk there in about 5-10 minutes. It is convenient. I can’t stress it enough. It is absolutely worth every cent you spend when you can walk home after a night at the Magic Kingdom (and this holds true for Contemporary or Bay Lake Tower). Its also tremendously convenient to use the monorail to get back and forth to Epcot from the Contemporary. We never waited for any length of time and there was always space on the monorail with our giant stroller.
Bay Lake Tower is now our new favorite resort at Disney World. The location cannot be beat. The staff really made us feel like we were “home.” If you ever see Virginia at the front desk tell her I said hi. She deserves a medal for dealing with our issues. The pool with no deep end worked great for us with a four-year-old. And we absolutely loved the unit itself. If you can find availability this is the place to stay while you are on Disney property!
